"...The future of our global healthcare world lies in the international collaborative
competencies of the next generation of healthcare leaders..." (Dr. Anette Wu, University World News)
General Rules of Conduct
Different cultures
-
Be mindful of other students’ backgrounds
-
This is an international program, so be mindful that many students are not native English speakers
-
Be patient and take turns during your discussion sessions.
-
Encourage non-native English speaking students to speak.
-
Native English-speaking students should make an effort to slow down and speak more clearly.
-
Timeliness
Be punctual and communicative.
-
Once you agree on times for the video sessions in the small groups you must attend. This is a sign of professionalism and collegiality.
-
Always notify your group if you cannot attend (i.e. illness, exams, family emergency).
-
One student should take the leadership for the group. Please agree on one name who will be the contact for the National Student Leaders or the program.
-
If you need to drop out of the program please contact your group, Dr. Wu at Columbia and your national student leaders. Do not "ghost" your group, please!
Participation
Be an active member of the community.
-
Volunteer as group leader and keep your group together (contact missing group members, accommodate different time zones and school schedules, help building a welcoming and collaborative culture)
Networking
One of the goals of the program is early student networking. Please join the Instagram group (link is on the website) and do not be shy to post questions and comments!
-
Immersive experiences
During the year or after the program, students will have the opportunity to take part in “short term immersions,” online or in person in which they can visit one of the partnering universities and be hosted/shown around by local students (travel not funded by ICEP).
Reciprocity is expected! If there is a student visiting your school, please help show them around, and if possible, offer to host them.
Residency placements or clinical rotations
*NOTE: ICEP program is not intended for students who aspire to work in the partner countries. Our effort is to create a global student professional networking group for future international collaboration and leaders in different countries. It is expected that students build collegial friendships, return to their home countries and eventually work there and hopefully collaborate with the other students as they advance in their careers. Do not to regard this program as an opportunity for residency placement in the US. We are not prepared for this purpose and we cannot help you. You are blocking someone's seat.
Contact the program if your intention is residency program placement in the US so you can be directed to more suitable programs. ICEP is not for you and you are not meant for ICEP then!
Please understand that personal visa and immigration questions should never be addressed in any of the discussion groups.
Clinical rotations are offered at select partner universities only. None* of the US and UK schools are participating in the offerings for clinical rotations.
*Exceptions - Kyoto University, Keio University, Tokyo Women's Medical University medical students for Columbia University; Seoul National University School of Dentistry dental students for Columbia's College of Dental Medicine. Do not attempt to find yourself clinical rotations on your own. Your school will be asked to leave the program.
